Dr. Smith’s journey to independent family medicine has been wonderfully winding—starting in rural New Hampshire fruit farms, passing through the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and detouring to a massage therapy career before depositing her at the University of Arizona School of Medicine. There, Dr. Smith found her true calling as a physician, and focused her studies in women's health and culturally competent care of under-resourced communities.
Before her move to Kona, Dr. Smith served as chief resident at Spokane Family Medicine Residency, as a full-spectrum family medicine physician at Winslow Community Clinic, and as a hospitalist at the Flagstaff Medical Center. Across these varied environments, one thing stayed constant—Dr. Smith’s ability to create true relationships with her patients, inspired by the traditional heart-focused style of medicine practiced by doctors years ago. She is thrilled to open a clinic where she will have the time and space to provide her unique style of high-quality and personalized primary care.
When she’s not at the clinic, you can find Dr. Smith exploring Kona’s stunning cultural and physical beauty. She’s also a roller derby girl (winner of the “Brick House” award in 2009!), fire spinner, stilt-walker, acrobat, and performer. Ask her about the time she played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar!
Cindy completed her BS in nursing from the University of Utah and MS in nursing at Westminster College in Utah. She is currently pursuing a post-graduate degree to become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner from Walden University. She moved to the Big Island from Utah in 2004 and considers the Big Island home. She enjoys caring for the entire family, which is why she specializes in family practice. She enjoys women's health and prescribes bioidentical hormone replacement for both women and men. Cindy is skilled in dermatological procedures, which she enjoys doing. She will be certified to do CDL exams and is currently undergoing certification to perform ECHOs and treadmill stress tests.
She enjoys playing with her keiki at the beach or park when she is not working or studying. She enjoys scuba diving and loves seeing the evolution of new reefs along the Kona coast. In addition, she loves gardening and playing the piano and violin.
Michele grew up in the small town of Pahala, and has called Kona home for the last 14 years. Before joining Dr. Smith’s clinic, she managed operations for the automotive, advertising, and fast-food industries. At Dr. Smith’s clinic, patients benefit from Michele’s close attention to detail at every step in the care process—from setting appointments to navigating insurance.
When she is not ensuring that every single patient receives the best possible care, you can find Michele spending time with her husband of 28 years, their two sons, and her two precious granddaughters. She loves sports—softball, volleyball, basketball, and soccer especially!—spending time at the beach, and listening to her friends and family sing and talk story.
